The update follows a State of Colorado Board of Health decision
(Colorado Springs, CO) – The Vital Records Office at El Paso County Public Health (EPCPH) will update eligibility requirements for birth and death certificates following a State of Colorado Board of Health decision.
Effective Oct. 15, 2024, grandparents will no longer be eligible to request birth certificates or death records for grandchildren based on their relationship. Eligibility to apply will be established on legal grounds and acceptable documentation, such as but not limited to a certified court order of custody, will, insurance/benefits, bank statements, property deeds, etc.
The Vital Records Office at EPCPH encourages anyone who may be affected by the change in eligibility to apply for necessary documentation before Oct. 15, 2024. Following the change in eligibility, people may experience a delay in requests for birth and/or death certificates if their relationship to the requesting party requires additional verification.
More information regarding birth and/or death certificates is available at elpasocountyhealth.org.
