In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, Public Health emphasizes the benefits of social connection for mental health and ways to build and strengthen connections with one another. Research shows that building connections with others and feeling well-connected to the community increases a sense of belonging, enhances emotional well-being, and lowers levels of social isolation or loneliness.
“Reach out to someone you care about, hike with your friend, try a new activity,” said Brittany Riffle, youth resilience and suicide prevention planner for El Paso County Public Health. “These seemingly small actions are proven coping strategies that support our mental wellness. And, when taking care of ourselves, we can better support loved ones through difficult times.”
Create connections to support your mental health
This month, Public Health encourages you to connect with someone and ask one of the following questions:
- What encourages you to show up each day?
- What is one thing that brings you joy?
- What book could you read more than once?
- What are you most proud of?
- What’s something you’ve always wanted to try but haven’t?
